Royal Doulton teamed up with award winning fashion designer Julien Macdonald to develop unique and exclusive ranges of contemporary tableware, giftware, crystal and glassware – namely, Intrigue, Ignite, and Temptation.
Julien’s celebrity dress list includes Kate Moss, Liz Hurley, and Victoria Beckham. And his awards embrace British Glamour Designer of the Year 2001 and 2003 and 2003 GQ Men of the Year Awards - Womenswear Designer.
Julien Macdonald said, “Royal Doulton is a renowned British brand and I have always been a fan of its elegantly designed product. When approached to design an exclusive range myself, I was thrilled to be involved in this prestigious brand.”
Intrigue and Ignite
This winning collaboration began with the Intrigue and Ignite ranges of cutting edge crystal and glassware. These added a new depth to the Royal Doulton product offering with their focus on the sexy, the sophisticated, and the chic, reflecting the romance and the refinement of the Julien Macdonald’s fashion collection.
Julien Macdonald said, “I thought carefully about the differing style of the two ranges. Intrigue emulates my signature cobweb spiral design, which is hand etched all around the glassware. Its elegance makes it perfect for those sophisticated dinner parties.”
Intrigue is modern and sophisticated hand made and hand etched 24% lead crystal, with a fascinating linear motif inspired by the signature ‘web’ pattern Julien used to create his iconic dresses. It boasts a special mix of polished and fine matt cuts to give each piece an eye-catching effect.
Ignite hand made glass is a truly innovative and alluring range of dramatic red glass in an unmistakably contemporary shape. Julien Macdonald commented, “Ignite is an innovative range that that uses daring red glass in a contemporary shape. Inspired by the curves of the female body, Ignite emulates everything that is luxurious and sexy.”
Ignite helps move Royal Doulton on from more traditional footed wine glasses with the introduction of a fully hand-made, more solid base form and striking cased red bowl. Julien added, “Ignite is a bold range with a brilliant blood red tinged glass and a clear stem, perfect for any moment.”
Royal Doulton Crystal & Glassware Designer Joanne Baker said of Intrigue and Ignite, “It was a great opportunity to work with a high profile designer who was new to glassware. This meant that he brought a fresh, broad thinking approach to the concept work. He really knew no limits. And my technical skills and experience complemented his design expertise. We spent a day in London sketching the glassware designs, honing them down to what was aesthetic and appealing, while being achievable and practical.”
Temptation
Temptation is genuinely opulent dinnerware: it’s a design statement that blends Royal Doulton’s rich eclectic tradition with Julien Macdonald’s cutting approach to high fashion. Temptation was conceived and developed to feature Julien’s distinctive approach and signature colour palette across the range.
Temptation bone china tableware is bold in its feminine elegance, using black and gold accents to add a dramatic touch. Indeed, its stylish sweeping lines accentuate a tableware shape that is both curvaceous and sensual. After all, Temptation blends the sweeping modern ellipse and classic pedestals of the Symmetry bone china shape - which is made in England - with a contemporary approach to design.
Furthermore, Temptation giftware brings the finishing touch to the whole collection – but adds a touch of luxury in its own right. Here, the striking faceted edges of the canapé trays, candlesticks, and bowls are purpose-designed to echo the stunning gemstones featured in Julien’s bold approach. The stark contrast of black and white is employed to complement the tableware to dramatic effect.
The combination of Royal Doulton with a leading name in haute couture fashion design has clearly led to the creation of truly aspirational and functional lifestyle products for the discerning consumer.
